Hundreds of Groups working to change Logan

MANY readers who are involved with community groups recognise this time of year as annual general meeting season.

As someone born and bred in Logan City I have always appreciated the role these groups play in strengthening our local area.

Well-over 500 different organisations do important work across so many fields, including housing, seniors, employment, sport, welfare and much more.

Having been elected to represent our area in the federal parliament, I want to work very closely with our community groups.

I said many times during the recent campaign that my ambition for Logan is for it to be two things - the epicentre of opportunity in Australia and the type of place famous for people who look out for each other and look after each other.

So it has been especially pleasing to be able to spend the first couple of weeks in the job meeting with as many local organisations as I can and discussing plans for the year ahead.

At the Youth and Family Service in Logan Central, for example, I heard of the great work they do looking after the most vulnerable in our local area, helping with housing, legal advice and a range of other crucial services.

At the Working Against Violence Support Service meeting I had the opportunity to discuss the ways they are educating people about violence in relationships, counselling women who have been affected, and providing support in crisis situations. As I said on my Facebook page it was inspiring.

These are just two of the many fantastic community groups making Logan stronger.

Right across Rankin organisations are pitching in, finding solutions and improving all of our lives by servicing those who need the most help. The success stories from our community groups could fill this entire newspaper many times over.

That's the thing about Logan that the knockers don't understand.

Yes, we have some challenges that we're determined to address. But we also have the necessary big hearts and the necessary organisational commitment to make this truly a community that looks out for each other. As your new federal MP I want to be part of that effort.
