Businesses pitch in to support team

THE signs hung high above the grandstands at the Metro read 'your team thanks you'.

They were a really nice touch from the Thunder women - Logan's very own national basketball league team - recognising the surge of community support which saved their season.

The Thunder is the only team we have playing in a major sports national competition, which makes them a key symbol of our city.

It was the way local businesses pitched in to provide the financial support necessary to compete at all this year which is an even more important symbol of our community spirit.

You don't have to be a long-term basketball fan like me to appreciate what the Logan community did to come together and provide the funds needed for the season to go ahead.

So many businesses and families put their hands in their pockets or wrote cheques.

In just the first 24 hours of its operation, for example, the Save the Thunder website and Facebook page raised more than $10,000.

You also don't need to know a great deal about the game to enjoy an afternoon at the Metro watching them compete.

I went along last Saturday, for this season's first home game and there were a lot of people enjoying the contest - but we can do better.

Even if you've never seen a game before, come along and help fill the stands and make some noise for this fantastic local team.

That the Thunder surrendered a sizable lead to go down to a quality Melbourne side on Saturday, is not the most important thing about the day.

The fact they were competing at all after coming so close to missing out, should give us all heart.
