LOCAL MULTICULTURAL COMMUNITIES URGED TO SEND ABBOTT A MESSAGE

Jim Chalmers, Federal Member for Rankin, has today helped launch a website so the local community can send Tony Abbott a message to reverse his cruel $370,000 cuts to multicultural organisations in the Rankin area.

The website – www.ISupportCommunities.com – calls on the Abbott Government to reverse its decision to cut $11.5 million from the Building Multicultural Communities Program which has left local community groups in funding limbo, including:

Access Community Services $146,556

Buddaha’s Light International Association QLD $9,737

Hosanna Logan City $10,000

Khmer Buddhist Society of QLD $2,964

Logan City Council $9,538

Logan City Netball Association $3,314

PCYC Logan Branch $106,990

The Salvation Army Calamvale Corps $20,000

Islamic Women’s Association of Queensland $20,545

Rodelu Woodridge Uruguay Sports and Social Club $44,981

“Tony Abbott has cruelly cut grants to organisations that work to help our local community,” Jim Chalmers said.

“These organisations are run by dedicated volunteers who serve our community and work to maintain social cohesion."

“The best way that governments can help build inclusive, harmonious communities is from the bottom up, by supporting grassroots programs like this.”

Jim Chalmers encouraged local organisations and residents to share this website and help pressure Tony Abbott to reverse his cruel cuts to multicultural organisations.

“I call on the Abbott Government to release the funds that have been approved to organisations in the local community to let them continue doing the great work they do,” Jim said.
