At this time of year, I really enjoy getting together with schools across our community to celebrate the successes of teachers and students and farewell the graduating classes.

At every one of the sports awards, speech nights and graduation ceremonies I’ve attended over the past few weeks, there have been some truly outstanding local students who will go on to great things.

I’m often impressed by how community-minded our local young people are.

This supports the results of a recent survey of nearly 14,000 young people around the country that was conducted by Mission Australia.

The three most important issues identified in the survey for youth in Queensland were the economy, political values, and equity and discrimination.

Despite the popular misconception that young people are not interested in politics and political issues, youth in our community and across Australia have listed these issues as among the most important to them.

The decisions made by governments today will affect the lives of young people for years to come, which makes the voice of youth so important for a healthy political system.

With a State election next year, it's now so important for local young people to enrol to vote so they can have their voice heard.

If you or your children need any help enrolling to vote, please visit the Australian Electoral Commission website or get in contact with my office.
