Like me, you would have been saddened by the news of the devastating fire in the prep classroom at Marsden State School in last week’s Reporter.
Apart from destroying the teaching space for the children in Prep KF, the fire also destroyed thousands of dollars’ worth of supplies, much of which belonged to teachers and were not covered by insurance.
While the fire was tragic, the community’s response has been nothing short of heart-warming.
Parents and concerned locals shared the request for donations on social media and by word of mouth, and before long hundreds of dollars’ worth of supplies had been donated to the school, trailers had been organised, people were pitching in however they could.
Officeworks at Browns Plains set up an in-store donation spot for the school, for vital supplies like stationery and art equipment.
The new state MP Cameron Dick is working with the school on new security measures.
Our local teachers go above and beyond in the course of their work and I know the classroom teachers Ms K and Ms Red, as well as the Deputy Principal Ms Stathis, are very appreciative of the generous support from the community.
When I visited the school last Thursday to inspect the damage and replace a digital camera, the kids and the staff were in high spirits.
We should be proud of our community and the way we look after each other in times of need.
