New store brings local jobs

Last week saw the opening of the new Woolworths on Fifth, the supermarket at the core of a whole new complex of speciality stores in Marsden.

For months now as I have moved about our community, I've been peering over the construction fence eager to catch a glimpse of this new development.

As I did, I thought of how much easier it will be for local people to do their shopping, in some cases by walking around the corner rather than being a bus or taxi ride away.

I thought about parents dropping in just before or just after picking the kids up from local schools - from Burrowes or Marsden or Berrinba East.

I thought about the healthier options put within reach by a more convenient location. And the community groups that will benefit from generous donations.

But as I told the well-attended opening ceremony, I thought most of all about the jobs that are being created: 95 at Woolies and many more in the neighbouring shops.

That's 95 more jobs in a community that desperately needs them and really appreciates them, for people of all ages, at all times, at each stage of their careers.

All of us who care deeply about local employment, especially among our youth, will join me in wishing Store Manager Kylie Turner all the best as she manages these new jobs in our community.
