Local Families Hit Hardest

As we head into an expensive time of year for Logan families, a lot of people have come to me with concerns about the Turnbull Government’s planned cuts to family payments.

Unfortunately, the Turnbull Government’s cuts will hit more families here than anywhere else in Queensland, including 18,439 families in our community who receive Family Tax Benefit A and 15,785 families who receive Family Tax Benefit B.

A single parent family in Logan with a couple of kids in high school could be more than $4,700 per year worse off because of the Liberals’ plan to cut family tax benefits and the Schoolkids Bonus. A working couple in the same situation would be around $2,600 worse off.

I don’t know many families in our community who can afford to have that much money ripped off them, especially if the Government’s planned GST rise and healthcare cost hike goes ahead as well.

If there was a single demonstration of how out of touch Malcolm Turnbull and the Liberals are with the lives of local families, I think this is it.

A lot of local people who cheered when Mr Abbott left office are now working out that Mr Turnbull takes the same harsh approach to people on middle and low incomes.

We shouldn’t compromise on fairness, so Labor will keep protecting local families from Malcolm Turnbull’s unfair cuts, and we will keep fighting his proposal to increase the GST as well.
