It’s been a very busy time for local schools as they come together to recognise students’ achievements in academic, cultural and sporting activities over the past year.
So far, I’ve been to ten schools to see off the graduating Grade 12 students, and I have several primary school ceremonies coming up next week as well.
We have some great teachers and schools in our area, so I am always pleased to go along and celebrate their successes.
But it’s not always about getting perfect marks.
I know some students need to work harder than all their peers to get by with a pass, and I believe they deserve to be recognised for their efforts.
That’s why I like to give the Jim Chalmers Rankin Award to a graduating student who has overcome adversity to achieve a passing grade at school, enabling them to go on to future studies.
Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to make every school ceremony, because of clashes among my forty-four local schools and my parliamentary obligations in Canberra.
Last sitting week was particularly special, as the Grade 6 students at Harris Fields came to visit Parliament House as part of their school trip.
Congratulations to all of the students and teachers as we finish the school year, and good luck to all graduates in the years ahead.
