Turnbull’s Plans to Make School More Expensive

With the start of school term just around the corner, it is an exciting, but expensive, time of year for local families.
I know the budget will be tight for many of you as you pay for uniforms, books, stationery, school shoes and all the other costs associated with sending a child to school.
That’s one reason that Labor introduced the Schoolkids Bonus in 2013 – to make sure all kids start the year with the essentials to excel at school.
This week and next, eligible Logan families should be receiving this payment, but it will unfortunately be the last start-of-year bonus paid.
The Turnbull Government has committed to cutting the Schoolkids Bonus in 2017.
This means 18,439 local families will miss out on this assistance – more than any other community in Queensland.
Cutting the Schoolkids Bonus will make education more expensive for local families, especially when combined with Mr Turnbull’s plans to jack up the GST.
An increase in the rate of the GST would have a hip-pocket impact of about $4,000 a year for the average Australian family.
In the election year ahead, I’m going to continue to stand up for our community and against the LNP’s unfair plans to hike the cost of living for local families.
