M1 Bottleneck for Commuters

On Tuesday night for the third budget in a row, the Abbott-Turnbull Government has failed to allocate a single cent to easing congestion on the M1.

For all the Liberals' big talk on the M1, nothing for three years.

As someone who has lived next to or near the M1 for most of my life, I know too well how congestion on the M1 can prevent many of you from spending time with your families.

That's why I was so pleased to announce $168 million to upgrade the Southbound Gateway-M1merge with Opposition Leader Bill Shorten and Labor Candidate for Forde Des Hardman in Logan last week.

Labor's announcement will be matched by a $42 million investment from the Queensland Labor Government to add additional southbound lanes on the M1 between Eight Mile Plains and Springwood, with construction to start next year.

No doubt most people in our community have sat in barely-moving traffic on the M1, where there are 7 km long traffic queues for four hours during peak periods on weekday afternoons and weekends.

Labor's announcement of funding for the M1 continues our strong record of investment in local roads, with $312.5 million worth of upgrades to the M1 which were paid for and completed when we were last in government.

The Federal Budget has confirmed that only a vote for Labor will see real action on the M1, putting local people first.
